The Pride - Royal Court Theatre

The Pride

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

BERTIE Carvel and JJ Feild will lead the cast of Alexi Kaye Campbell’s The Pride which opens in the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Upstairs on November 26, 2008 (previews from November 21).

The Pride examines changing attitudes to sexuality over a period of 50 years, looking at intimacy, identity and the courage it takes to be who you really are.

In 1958, Philip (Feild) is in love with Oliver (Carvel), but is married to Sylvia (Lyndsey Marshal). In 2008, Oliver is addicted to sex with strangers. Sylvia loves them both.

Carvel’s theatre credits include Parade (Donmar Warehouse) for which he received an Olivier nomination for his performance as convicted murderer Leo Frank; and The Man of Mode, The Life of Galileo and Coram Boy (all at the National Theatre).

Feild was last seen on the London stage as twin brothers Hugo and Frederic in the revival of Jean Anouilh’s 1947 comedy, Ring Round the Moon at the Playhouse Theatre. His numerous screen credits include Northanger Abbey, Ruby in the Smoke, Shadows in the North (TV) and the forthcoming Telstar (film).

Marshal has previously appeared on stage in Fireface (Royal Court), A Matter of Life and Death (National Theatre), Absurdia (Donmar Warehouse), and The Hypochondriac (Almeida Theatre), as well as the BBC TV mini-series Rome.

Jamie Lloyd will direct a cast that also includes Tim Steed. An Associate Director at the Donmar Warehouse, Lloyd’s credits include Piaf which has recently transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre; the Pinter double bill The Lover and The Collection (Comedy Theatre); and Guys and Dolls (UK tour).

The Pride, which runs until December 20, 2008, is designed by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting by Jon Clark and music and sound by Ben and Max Ringham.
