To Kill A Mockingbird - Tricycle Theatre

To Kill a Mockingbird

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

SALLY Knyvette will direct a company of professional barristers, solicitors and judges in Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird at the Tricycle Theatre – for just six performances, from May 7 to May 10, 2008.

To Kill A Mockingbird is set in 1930’s America, in a small town in the Deep South, where lawyer Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson, a man accused of rape. Atticus shows himself a man of integrity and risks his own and his family’s safety to do the right thing in the face of racism. His children, especially his daughter Scout, make a journey of discovery about their father, their neighbours and the community they live in.

Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel which deals with racial prejudice, injustice and humanity, was published in 1960 and has become a modern classic read by millions. In 1962, it was made into a major motion picture with Gregory Peck starring as Atticus Finch, a role that won him an Academy Award.

Knyvette, an actor, director and teacher, has previously directed the Tricycle Lawyers in Inherit the Wind, Twelve Angry Men and Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? However, she is probably best known for her role as Kate Sugden in TV’s Emmerdale.

The cast includes Sir Michael Burton, High Court Judge, Royal Courts of Justice and Grahame Gordon, Solicitor/Senior Partner of Lowe and Gordon Seminars, as well as Timothy Akers, Sarah Awa, Rachel Barker, Mark Boulle, Mirelle Burridge, Rodney Campbell, Joanna Corr, Annabel Dearing, Bernard George, Seaton Gordon, Janet Grant, Peter Herbert, Peter Hill, Leon Kerr, Colin Manning, Justin Michaelson, Rita Murphy, Maggie Robson and Helena Ross.

To Kill a Mockingbird, which is designed by Rhiannon Newman Brown, will be presented as Benefit performances for the Tricycle’s new writing and education programmes.
