Tonight at 8:30 is a collection of nine one-act plays. From vaudeville to satire, broad farce to intricate comedy of manners, melodrama to romance, these plays encompass the full kaleidoscopic range of Coward’s writing.
Nuffield associate Blanche McIntyre will direct this new production of Tonight at 8:30, the UK’s first major revival of nine of Coward’s one-act plays since Coward himself starred in them in the original 1936 West End production.
This production returns a repertory ensemble cast to the British stage, which will perform these nine pieces as three trios.
At both Nuffield and in every touring venue there will be opportunities for audiences to experience the full theatrical spectacle of the production in unique marathon events, in which they see all nine performed on the same day.
Noël Coward’s plays include Private Lives, Hay Fever, Design for Living, Present Laughter and Blithe Spirit. His screenwriting credits include In Which We Serve (which he also co-directed) and Brief Encounter, which was inspired by Still Life, one of the plays in Tonight at 8:30.
