Under Milk Wood - Tricycle Theatre

Philip Madoc

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

PHILIP Madoc will lead the cast of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood which runs at the Tricycle Theatre from May 12 to May 24, 2008.

Thomas’ most famous and enduring work was first performed by six actors in the Kaufman auditorium in New York in May 1953 with Thomas himself reading the First Voice. Originally intended for radio – it was broadcast with Richard Burton in January 1954 – it has delighted theatre audiences for more than half a century.

Described as funny, bawdy, sad and sensual, it captures twenty-four hours in the lives – and dreams – of the inhabitants of Llareggub (read it backwards!), an imaginary small seaside town in south Wales.

Madoc’s more recent stage credits include The School for Scandal (as Sir Oliver Surface), The Merchant of Venice (as Shylock), Happiest Days of Your Life, The Merry Wives of Windsor (as Falstaff), The Blue Angel, The Old Devils and Faust (title role).

His screen credits include Here Comes the Queen, Doctors, High Hopes, A Very British Coup, Fortunes of War and The Life of Times of Lloyd George (TV); Den of Lions, The Biographer, The Spy Who Came In from the Cold and Operation Daybreak (film).

Malcolm Taylor will direct a cast that also includes Howell Evans (Rope, The Wizard of Oz, Twelfth Night), Cerith Flinn (in his professional stage debut), Abi Harris (The Mousetrap, It Runs in the Family), Jennifer Hill (The House of Bernarda Alba, The Crucible), Gareth Kennerley (War Horse, Saint Joan, Fiddler on the Roof), Glyn Pritchard (Hard Times, Accidental Death of an Anarchist) and Anne Rutter (Staying On, Under Milk Wood), with the voice of David Jason as the Voice of the Guidebook.

To coincide with performances, Thomas’ daughter, Aeronwy Thomas, will talk to Malcolm Taylor about her father. The talk, which will be accompanied by a presentation of private photographs and audio extracts, takes place on Sunday, May 11 (at 7:30pm). Tickets: £12 and £10 reductions.

Tickets: £10 – £20 plus reductions; allocated seats are available for an additional £5.

Times: Monday to Saturday at 8pm; Saturday matinees at 4pm; midweek matinees (Thursday, May 15 and Wednesday, May 21) at 2pm.
