The Veronicas - Hook Me Up

The Veronicas, Hook Me Up

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 3 out of 5

THE Veronicas arrive on UK shores having established themselves as the biggest name in Australian pop.

Comprised of twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, The Veronicas combine electro-pop and pop-punk to emerge as an Oz-like equivalent of Pink.

They’re not interested in conforming to most girl group trends, however. But they do like to make you sit up and notice.

Album opener Untouched is a good example of how they succeed in doing that in a positive way. With its super-charged synth rushes and attention-grabbing guitar riffs, it’s a lively, energetic dancefloor workout that’s guaranteed to leave you breathless afterwards.

This momentum is maintained on title track Hook Me Up, which replaces the guitar surges with an insistent electronic throb.

But they don’t always get it right and their no holds barred approach can sometimes grate. Of the 14 tracks, it’s equally killer and filler.

This Is How It Feels is a mind-numbing disco pounder that lacks much soul, Take Me On The Floor an innuendo-laden disco-stomp that’s a little too generic for its own good, and Popular a bad example of the sisters attempting to drop a rap-rock attitude that’s almost as embarrassing as hearing Madonna attempt the same thing on American Life.

But such moments are offset by more successful offerings such as the heartbreak anthem This Love, which contains an appealing melody and a keen sense of vulnerability; the moody I Can’t Stay Away, which benefits from a really good back-beat and plenty of sassiness; the brash I Don’t Wanna Wait, and the Pink-like Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were), which is comparable in both delivery and lyrics.

Also worth catching are the emphatic power-pop ballad Someone Wake Me Up and another former single, the punk-rock dirty disco floor-filler that is 4Ever.

Overall, The Veronicas do enough with Hook Me Up to explain why they’ve conquered Australia in such emphatic fashion. They may take a little while longer to do the same in the UK, but there’s enough to like about this new LP… not least because they’re a girl group who prefer to deliver attitude instead of saccharine.
