Blue Valentine's NC-17 overturned in the US
Story by Jack Foley
OSCAR tipped movie Blue Valentine has had its NC-17 rating overturned by the MPAA’s ratings appeals board in the US.
According to initial reports, their U-turn was prompted by a personal appeal made by Harvey Weinstein to the ratings board.
The dreaded [and restrictive] NC-17 rating had earlier been applied because of what the MPCC perceived to be the film’s “shocking” and “gory depiction of a dying marriage”.
It was seen as a potentially threatening obstacle to the film’s awards season hopes, as well as its box office potential.
The film stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a married couple struggling to avoid the end of their relationship. It’s juxtaposed by scenes of them falling in love and was a recent standout of the London Film Festival.
The film will now get a limited release from December 31 in the US, before opening in UK cinemas in January.
