Disney's Tangled topples Harry Potter in the US
Story by Jack Foley
DISNEY’S 50th animated movie Tangled has topped the US box office in its second week of release, knocking Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, Part 1 into second place.
The Rapunzel update earned an estimated $21.5 million, to take its overall US gross so far to $96.5 million, while Harry Potter took in an estimated $16.7 million to take its US total to $244.2 million.
Distributor Warners is confident it will reach $300 million domestically in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere at what proved to be a slow weekend at the US box office, Cher musical Burlesque tied with Denzel Washington’s Unstoppable in third place, with $6.1 million.
And adult orientated romantic comedy Love and Other Drugs, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, took $5.7 million to round off the top five.
Another new release, the independently financed martial arts-Western actioner The Warrior’s Way, only just crept into the top 10 with an estimated $3.1 million – which marked an under-performance. The film reportedly cost an estimated $42 million to make.
